BROOKSHIRE HOUSE AND HIGHLINE REHAB CO-SPONSOR CAFE CONNECT
Brookshire House and Highline are co-sponsors for the Cafe Connect at the Johnson Adult Day Program.
June's event was called "Buzz with a Beat" and it included healthy snacks, provided by Brookshire House and
Highline and an introduction to Zumba. Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music with easy to follow
dance steps that are just fun to do. Their slogan is "Ditch the workout, Join the party".
And you can tell that it is fun by the smile on everyone's faces. They even did a modified version of chair
Zumba. Stay tuned for the next Cafe Connect event!

WELCOME TO YARA, NEW LIFE ENRICHMENT ASSISTANT
Brookshire is happy to welcome Yara as our new Life Enrichment Assistant. Now that our Life Enrichment program has the extra help, we are able to offer activities in the evenings. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, our team engages residents in activities such as Wii Bowling, Bingo, and Dominoes.

NEW MENUS
Brookshire House is always looking for ways to be able to facilitate the needs of our residents with Dementia. Recently, we have begun implementing menus at every meal. The menus feature pictures on one side and writing on the other. So far, they have been a big hit!

PICNIC IN THE PARK
Brookshire House residents appreciate a wide variety of activities, yet one of the most popular of those activities is going on a picnic to the park. This spring, the residents took a sack lunch (prepared by the dietary department) to Observation Park. While soaking in the sunshine, residents really enjoyed watching children play as well as owners walking their pets.

SIMPLE PLEASURES
Brookshire House is happy to be enriching the lives of their elders by indulging them with simple pleasures. Residents have the opportunity to enjoy different treats that can make a small impact in anyone’s day. Some of those pleasures may be enjoying a cheeseburger and French fries from Burger King, going out for pie and coffee at Village Inn, or delighting in a root beer float. Whatever the pleasure, Brookshire House desires to put a smile on their Elders’ faces.

RUTH WHYTE PARK
Ruth Whyte is one of our many residents that call Brookshire House home. After graduating in the early 1950’s from the University of Colorado, Ruth moved to Aspen and began an exciting life of philanthropic work for the then small mining town of Aspen. It is because of Ruth’s hard work and financial benevolence that the Aspen Historical Society (AHS) now exists. In her honor, the AHS named a park to stand as a permanent tribute to this wonderful woman.

FUN-FILLED EASTER
Brookshire House celebrated a fun-filled week of Easter activities. Residents enjoyed decorating Easter eggs, filling plastic eggs with candy, and participating in a joint egg hunt with Amberwood Court.
At a leisurely afternoon social on Sunday, the elders and their families relaxed and reminisced about pleasant Easter memories and traditions.

Art work selected for Memories in the Making Art Show and Auction
One of our elders, Louis Aguilar’s paintings has been chosen for the 15th Annual Memories In the Making Art Auction! Last year over 4,000 pieces were submitted and only 65-70 were selected for the Memories in the Marking Art Show and Auction so as you can see, this is a huge honor! Congratulations Louis!!! The 2010 Alzheimer's Association Memories in the Making Art Show and Action will be held Thursday, June 10, 2010 at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium.

Afternoon Tea
Sunday afternoon tea is a leisurely time shared together. Residents dress up in their special hats and scarves and share time together filled with sips of special aroma teas, tastes of honey, and nostalgic discussions. The elders and their family members get an opportunity to share precious memories as well as have some fun with laughter and joke telling.

Checkers Challenge!
One of Brookshire House's resident, Edwin recently shared with us that "Checkers is on of my favorite games." When Brookshire's Activity Director, Sally, heard this, she got Edwin his very own checkers and board. Since that time, Edwin has been challenging almost everyone he meets to a checkers dual. Staff and residents make sure they take advantage of every opportunity to play Edwin in checkers. Even though Edwin may not win every game, he truly enjoys playing.
